About the Event

One in four of us experiences a mental health problem each year. Depression and anxiety alone afflicts over 500 million people worldwide. What is it about modern life that has so impacted our mental health? Drawing on 20 years of experience in neuroscience, psychology and psychiatry, Dean Burnett, a neuroscientist and author of the international bestseller Idiot Brain, will be at Words by the Water Literature Festival to explore why these problems arise.

Dean Burnett is a neuroscientist, blogger, sometimes-comedian and author. He lives in Cardiff, and is currently an honorary research associate at the Cardiff University Psychology School. He is an ambassador for the mental health charity ReThink, and has received the Public Engagement of Neuroscience award from the British Neuroscience Association. His books The Idiot Brain and The Happy Brain were international bestsellers published in over 20 countries. His most recent book is Psycho-Logical: Why Mental Health Goes Wrong – and How to Make Sense of It. His Guardian articles have been read over 16 million times and he currently writes the Brain Yapping blog for the Cosmic Shambles network.
