About the Event

The key biography of our greatest living playwright by one of the leading literary biographers.  With unprecedented access to private papers, diaries, letters and interviews with figures from Felicity Kendal to Steven Spielberg, Hermione Lee builds a meticulously researched portrait of Tom Stoppard.  Drawing on years of conversations with Stoppard it tracks his Czech origins and childhood in India to every school and home he’s lived in, every piece of writing he’s done, every play and film he’s worked on.  This is the story of a complex, private man which tells an enormous amount about him but leaves you, also, with the fascinating mystery of his ultimate unknowability.

Dame Hermione Lee, DBE, FBA, FRSL is a biographer, literary critic and academic.  She is a former Goldsmiths’ Professor of English Literature in the University of Oxford.  Samuel West is an actor on film, stage and radio and theatre director.
