About the Event

Over an hour at lunchtime, Jane Feaver and Lavinia Singer from the Faber Poetry Team will guide you through a reading of the poem ‘Wintering’ by Sylvia Plath. This event will be a live encounter, showing you how to find a way into a poem and how a poem might come to meet you. You’ll be given a print-out to annotate.

Sylvia Plath (1932-63) was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and studied at Smith College. In 1955 she went to Cambridge University on a Fulbright scholarship, where she met and later married Ted Hughes. She published one collection of poems in her lifetime, The Colossus (1960), and a novel, The Bell Jar (1963). Her Collected Poems, which contains her poetry written from 1956 until her death, was published in 1981 and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for poetry.

We hope that these sessions will be a stimulating way to spend your lunchtime in the company of other poetry lovers. Each session will run from 1.00 – 1.50 p.m. at The Bindery. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit the Members Cart, our pop-up bookshop laden with books and literary gifts, which will be open until 7 p.m. Biscuits provided!

This event is taking place at Faber’s headquarters at The Bindery, 51 Hatton Garden, London EC1N 8HN.
The nearest underground stations are Chancery Lane Station (Central line) and Farringdon Station (Circle, Elizabeth, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines).
Age guidance: 18+
Doors will open at 12.45 p.m. and the event will end at approximately 1.50 p.m.
There will be a bookshop open with books available by card payment only.
