About the Event

Over a lunch hour, Faber’s poetry editor Lavinia Greenlaw will guide you through a reading of  a poem by Emily Dickinson, one of our best-known poets. You’ll be given a list of resources for later exploration, but this event will be a live encounter, showing you how to find a way into any poem and how a poem might come to meet you. You’ll be given a print-out to annotate.

For this session, Lavinia has selected Emily Dickinson’s ‘I heard a Fly buzz – when I died -’.

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) kept herself, her life and her poetry in suspense. She held everything in mid-air, in a commitment to the truth of the world and human nature. ‘I heard a Fly buzz’ is an extraordinary suspension of the moment of death.

We hope that these sessions will be a stimulating way to spend your lunch hour in the company of other poetry lovers. Each session will run from 1.00 – 1.50 p.m. at The Bindery. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit the Members Cart, our monthly pop-up bookshop laden with books and literary gifts, which will be open until 4 p.m.
