Literature & Psychoanalysis: The Woman in Black
Out of stock
We are delighted that psychotherapist Shahrukh Husain will deliver the next instalment of our Literature and Psychoanalysis series, presenting on memory and its many uses in Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black (published by Vintage). The series invites leading psychoanalysts to chose a classic or contemporary work that they feel will connect with the theme and Faber Members as a community of readers.
Shahrukh Husain is a psychotherapist with thirty years’ experience. Some of those years were spent specialising in intercultural therapy and working with PTSD among refugees and survivors of war and disaster. She was drawn to Analytical Psychology (Jungian) because of her lifelong passion for myth and legend, and she has made extensive use of these stories in her therapeutic work. She has written fiction and non-fiction about myths and legends for children as well as adults.
During the course of her career as a therapist, she worked with a number of clients who found themselves caught up in supernatural worlds, from Jins, Abiku, witches and malign spirits to ‘everyday’ ghosts.
Arabel Charlaff is a psychodynamic psychotherapist who has worked in the NHS, the higher education sector and in private practice. Before retraining, she worked as an editor, literary consultant and ghost writer. She is particularly interested in the ways in which fiction and psychoanalysis can speak to and of each other and the rewards to be found in such a conversation. It was to this end that she founded Characters on the Couch, a writers’ service which combines clinical and editorial expertise. She teaches at the Faber Academy and at WPF Therapy.
