About the Event

This event brings together authors Francis Spufford and Sarah Winman to introduce their new, widely acclaimed novels, both beginning in 1944 against the backdrop of the Second World War.

In Light Perpetual by Francis Spufford, a German rocket strikes London and five young lives are atomised in an instant. In another November 1944 that rocket never lands. A single second in time is altered and five young lives go on to experience all the unimaginable changes of the twentieth century. From the best-selling author of Golden HillLight Perpetual is a story of the everyday, the miraculous and the everlasting. Light Perpetual is longlisted for the Booker Prize 2021.

Still Life by Sarah Winman is a big-hearted story of people brought together by love, war, art and the ghost of E.M. Forster. In 1944, in the ruined wine cellar of a Tuscan villa, as bombs fall around them, two strangers meet and share an extraordinary evening. Ulysses Temper is a young British soldier, Evelyn Skinner is a sexagenarian art historian and possible spy. Moving from the Tuscan Hills and piazzas of Florence to the smog of London’s East End, Still Life is a sweeping novel about love, family and fate.

Chaired by Rebecca Wilkie, New Writing North.
