About the Event

Come along to Mr B’s Emporium of Reading Delights for an evening with Jo Browning Wroe, author of one of the most extraordinary books of the year – ‘A Terrible Kindness’, and already chosen as one of the Observer’s Top Ten Debut Novelists of 2022!

It is 1966 and 18-year-old William, a former chorister who has refused to sing a note for years, has just graduated as an embalmer. He is at a swanky black-tie dinner when news breaks of a disaster, a mine collapse, that will haunt a generation of Britons: Aberfan.

The call goes out for volunteers and William doesn’t hesitate. He packs his equipment in his car and heads for south Wales. What he finds there will change William forever. But can helping others at their worst imaginable moment be the catalyst for this unique young man to heal his own wounds?

Wroe has produced a deeply moving and remarkably compassionate novel and, in William, a wholly convincing character who finds kindness and friendship in a place of unimaginable pain. Jo will be at Mr B’s to discuss her debut.

Tickets include author interview, a glass of wine and a 15% discount on any books in the shop on the night.
