Summary

The first figure raises his crossbow, tilting his head to pinpoint the exact position of the thing in the bushes. It has stopped running now, and is muttering something. Some kind of prayer, a call for its mother, its father: anyone who might help it.

Something sinister is going on in the stinking slums of London. Sideshow acts are going missing . . . men wearing animal masks and eye goggles are hunting them down and killing them for sport. But who are this fiendish Hunters’ Club? And what is the reason for their cruel game?

Sheba the wolfgirl and Pyewacket the witch’s imp know all about life in a sideshow. But now they are the Carnival, private investigators working to help unusual people like them. Teaming up with new recruits half-cat Inji, her extraordinary brother, the armadillo-like Sil and Glyph the psychic, it’s a race against time . . . to track down the mask-wearing villains, before anyone else comes to harm!

Critic Reviews

Great fun... set in the wonderful gothic world of Victorian London... [Larwood's] wild imagination and rich language have endeared him to librarians and teachers as much as their charges.

Take one of the most exciting, contemporary children's authors and a multi-talented illustrator and what do you get? A middle-grade series from superstars... that is so steeped in the atmospherics of a steampunk Victorian London that you can almost touch the grime and grit. Middle-grade writing and illustrating at its best!

Critic Reviews

[Larwood's] writing is so unique, the world he creates so innovative and captivating. A fast-paced page turner, full of grime and greed, carnival and colour, mystery and mayhem... The brilliant black and white gothic illustrations by Sam Usher just top this book off, adding atmosphere and fabulous detail to what I think is one of the best middle grade series.

Like a Peter Ackroyd for beginners. . .What would make this such a satisfying story to study as a class is his analysis of what makes people do bad things.
