Summary

Winner of the Shamus Award for Best PI Hardcover novel 2019

‘This is the second novel to feature the private investigator Roxane Weary, who’s a wonderful character. Lepionka is such an assured writer, with complete narrative authority from the first line.’ Sophie Hannah

Shaken by the outcome of her last big case, PI Roxane Weary is keeping a low profile. When she takes on a new client who suspects his fiancée is cheating on him, Roxane is happy to have landed a run-of-the-mill surveillance job. Until, that is, Marin Strasser, the woman she’s been tailing, turns up dead.

The police are convinced her client is the one who pulled the trigger. Certain – and scared – that things aren’t so straightforward, Roxane starts to follow a paper trail that gets more dangerous the farther it goes.

So who really was Marin Strasser? Who could have wanted her dead? And how can Roxane stop her work from once again pushing away the few people she thinks she can trust?

Critic Reviews

‘Lepionka has created an excellent PI in Roxane Weary, who plies her trade in Ohio. In What You Want to See, Weary is hired by a 60-year-old man to follow his much younger fiancée, who he suspects is cheating on him. A few days later she’s shot dead. It turns out she wasn’t what she seemed. He becomes the suspect, but Weary doesn’t believe he’s guilty. More people die. It’s a good plot, told very well, and the sympathetic Weary shines.’

Critic Reviews

What You Want to See reminds me of everything that made me fall in love with PI fiction. A great character, a vivid setting, a twisty, timely story that happens to be beautifully written. Kristen Lepionka and Roxane Weary are the best things to happen to the genre in years.

Critic Reviews

This is the second novel in a highly enjoyable series featuring Roxane Weary, a boozy, bisexual private detective in Ohio... fresh and fun.

Sunday Express
Critic Reviews

'That rare and precious thing, a sequel as good as, or even better than, the outstanding first in the series. It's wise, knowing, propulsive and perfectly pitched. Lepionka is a major new talent.'

Lee Child
Critic Reviews

‘Bursting with energy, alive with wit and sharp as a whiplash… A first-rate crime novel, that rare combination of a cleverly constructed plot with equally clever, insightful characterisation. Roxane, in her early thirties and driven to her precarious, not to say dangerous, profession by her desire to emulate her dead policeman father, is a truly interesting creation. In this second novel, Lepionka fleshes her out even further, doing so by deftly avoiding cliché and making her totally likeable, a cocktail in equal parts girl-next-door and pit-bull investigator... Lepionka paints truly convincing portraits of a disparate range of characters, each of them well-crafted and brilliantly rendered, each adding his or her peculiar tile to a mosaic that is as complex as it is satisfying… Lepionka has an uncanny knack for portraying relationships, for showing us what makes her characters tick. If she will keep creating plots as clever as her first two, then we can look forward to the third instalment of Roxane Weary’s adventures with justified anticipation.’
