A collaboration between one of the world’s most eminent poets, Nobel Prize-winner Derek Walcott, and one of its most coveted painters, Peter Doig. Through a long-standing friendship and creative affinity the two great artists have together produced a stunning full-colour book of fifty paintings and original poems.
A virtuoso pairing of two global artists who have made homes in the Caribbean: Walcott’s celebratory, limpid poems are each inspired by one of Doig’s painterly, fluid, elusive, enticing paintings, from “The Architect’s House by the Ravine” in 1991 to last year’s hallucinatory self-portait “Night Studio”. A gorgeous, intelligent, romantic, affordable treat.
Derek Walcott was born in St Lucia, in the West Indies, in 1930. The author of many plays and books of poetry, most recently White Egrets (2010), he was awarded the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in 1988, and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992. He died in 2017.
