Country Girls by Edna O’Brien is here adapted for the stage from the stunning, controversial novel that shocked a nation in 1960 – publishing to coincide with the paperback of Edna’s O’Brien’s astonishing memoir Country Girl.

Edna O’Brien’s wonderful, wild and moving novel shocked the nation on its publication in 1960. Adapted for the stage by the author, The Country Girls, the play, is a highly theatrical and free-flowing telling of this classic coming of age story.
The Country Girls premiered at the Garter Lane Theatre, Waterford, in October 2011. It was produced by Red Kettle Theatre Company, in association with the Garter Lane Arts Centre.
Edna O’Brien has written more than twenty works of fiction. She is the recipient of many awards, including the Irish PEN Lifetime Achievement Award, the American National Arts Gold Medal, the Frank O’Connor Prize, the PEN/Nabokov Award For Achievement in International Literature, and the David Cohen Prize for Literature.
