Faber to publish festive chiller by Peter Swanson
By Faber Editor, 25 April 2023
Faber is delighted to announce publication of a new festive chiller by the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Kind Worth Killing, Peter Swanson.
Publishing Director Angus Cargill acquired UK & Commonwealth rights from Sobel Weber Associates, via Caspian Dennis at Abner Stein. Faber will publish at the end of September 2023 alongside William Morrow in the US.
TV rights were immediately snapped up by Birdie Pictures, the new London-based production company set up by producer Phil Temple, and it is in development with a UK broadcaster. It will be adapted for the screen by Mika Watkins (Origin, Troy: Fall of a City, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities).
The Christmas Guest, described by Cargill as ‘the perfect mash-up of M. R. James and The Holiday’, is the story of a bright-eyed American student in London who is unexpectedly invited to Starvewood Hall, her classmate’s Cotswolds estate, for Christmas. There she quickly develops a crush on her friend’s twin brother but also starts to notice the increasingly odd behaviour of both the family and the locals, all of which she painstakingly records in the pages of her diary.
Peter Swanson said:
‘I’ve always loved a murder mystery set at Christmastime and always really enjoyed Mark Gatiss’s BBC Christmas specials, so I was thrilled for the opportunity to throw my hat into that particularly dark festive ring. I hope The Christmas Guest will be the perfect length for people’s creepy, one-sitting holiday read this Winter.’
Peter Swanson is the bestselling author of nine novels with Faber, including two Richard & Judy Book Club picks, The Kind Worth Killing and Rules for Perfect Murders. His most recent novel is The Kind Worth Saving.
