About Book

On publication of Andrew Motion's new book of poetry, Essex Clay, he joins Alan Hollinghurst in conversation.

Essex Clay looks back to recreate a stunning biographical sequel to Andrew Motion's acclaimed prose memoir, In the Blood. It rekindles, expands and gives a tragic resonance to subjects that have haunted the poet throughout his writing life, bringing together themes of loss, memory and retrieval.

Andrew Motion was UK Poet Laureate from 1999 to 2009 and is co-founder of the online Poetry Archive. In 2015 he was appointed Homewood Professor in the Arts at Johns Hopkins University and lives in Baltimore. Andrew Motion was knighted for his services to poetry in 2009.

Alan Hollinghurst is the author of six novels: The Swimming-Pool Library, The Folding Star, The Spell, The Line of Beauty, The Stranger's Child and The Sparsholt Affair. He has received the Somerset Maugham Award, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction and, in 2004, the Man Booker Prize. He lives in London.
