There are woods, a big bad wolf and a lost child . . . but it is a very modern fairytale. Woods and wolves here represent not just dark imagination, but a bleak, all-consuming mental illness. The obtuseness of Evans’s nightmare-logic will no doubt frustrate some . . . But by god, it goes to work on you. It’s also – crucially – a tender thing.
