A Life in Crime

Recorded in the summer of 2009, during Faber’s 80th year, it felt especially appropriate to be talking to an author whose association with the company went back over half of that time. P. D. James’s debut novel Cover Her Face was published in 1962, and many more novels followed – thirteen of them featuring the author’s most enduring creation, Adam Dalgliesh.

Speaking in the garden at her Holland Park home, in this 30-minute interview P. D. James recalled the years spent developing her craft and the evolution of Dalgliesh, the writers that inspired her, and the role detective fiction played in contemporary society.
