Waterstones are delighted to welcome the fabulous John Lanchester, author of “Capital” and recipient of the E.M. Forster award, as he talks about his terrifyingly prescient and critically acclaimed new novel “The Wall”.

Set in a disturbingly recognisable dsytopian future beset by environmental catastrophes and social unrest, a young man named Kavanagh must begin his first shift on the Wall as a Defender, tasked with keeping the Others out…

John will be interviewed by science fiction legend Chris Beckett, author of the Dark Eden series and America City, in which his pedigree for disturbing environmental disaster dystopia was resoundingly made.

Praise for The Wall:

‘His best novel . . . It asks only to be read on its own terms: as an unsettling, compulsive and brilliant portrait of powerlessness.’ Financial Times

’An environmental fable that manages to be both disquieting and quite good fun at the same time. .. Lanchester reveals with slow, steady control the cruelties of his strange new world and then socks you with their philosophical implications.’ Guardian

‘The Wall is a crackling adventure and an astute political fable . . . There is an on-the-nose quality to the allegory . . . Every secondary school library in the country needs to order a copy.’ Andrew Billen, The Times

‘An Orwellian dystopia that captures the anxieties of our decade.’ Sunday Telegraph

‘The strongest post-Brexit novel yet: simple enough in conception but carried off with real aplomb . . . Lanchester proves a master of allegory and finds much light and shade, as well as human tenderness, within his overarching conceit.’ Mail on Sunday
