John Evans

John Evans is a graduate of the University of Wales, where he completed his doctoral studies on Benjamin Britten in 1984. After five years as Research Scholar at the Britten-Pears Library and Archive, he joined the BBC as a producer for Radio 3, becoming the network's Head of Music in 1993. He was awarded a prestigious Sony Radio Award in 1996. His final projects for the BBC were the television production of Britten's The Turn of the Screw and Performing Britten - a ten-part radio series aired in 2006, devoted to Britten's major works for the lyric stage. As an academic, he has lectured extensively in the UK and North America; his publications have included Benjamin Britten: Pictures from a Life 1913-1976 and A Britten Source Book, and contributions to The Britten Companion and opera handbooks on Peter Grimes, Gloriana, The Turn of the Screw and Death in Venice. Dr Evans is Vice President of the Welsh Music Guild and, since 2007, President and Executive Director of the Oregon Bach Festival in the United States.
